Story
Synopsis:
“The Sparkles” is a short documentary film that follows young steel pannists in Brooklyn who aspire to win the Panorama Competition held in 2013. The Panorama is the the largest steel pan competition held annually in the United States, which is originaly from Trinidad and Tobago. Winning is a very honorable, meaningful achievement. In particular, this film exhibits a story about Crossfire, a band that struggles to win this competition despite their young age, various obstacles, difficult lives, and previous failures to win first place. Viewers will feel the charm of the young pannists and their immense dedication to their cultural roots and homeland.
Story:
Crossfire, a steel pan band that has been based in Brooklyn for more than 15 years, consists of members that are mostly teenagers and young adults. In the summer of 2013 they participated in the Panorama Competition, the largest steel pan contest since 1971. Crossfire has had numerous failed attempts placing first at the Panorama Competition. Adlib, which is another talented steel pan band, defeated Crossfire in 2012. Crossfire got 2nd place next to Adlib.
Isaiah Daniel is a high school student in Brooklyn. He plays a tenor pan in Crossfire and dreams to be a professional musician. Though Isaiah has only been playing steel pan in Crossfire for 4 years, he believes the steel pan is special, unique instrument unlike any other. His parents are from Trinidad and Tobago where the roots of steel pan are embedded. This is why Isaiah feels such a strong connection to his instrument. He wants people to know his passion for the steel pan only grows and gets larger.
Arielle Chase is the captain, or lead player, in Crossfire. She is a responsible, caring person and all her fellow players in Crossfire greatly depend on her.
Kendall Williams is an experienced musician who graduated from the New York University. His job in Crossfire is as an arranger, but it is his first time to teach such a large group. Kendal hopes that the young players will overcome the difficulties they face in their preparation for the competition.
Keifer Dover is a guitar panist in Crossfire. He is one of the few people in the band who is actually from Trinidad and Tobago. He has maintained his Trinidadian heritage and culture even after he moved to New York at teenager. What does he think about his teammates that are not from Trinidad or Tobago?
Crossfire was established in 1999 by Martin Douglas, ”Doggy”, the manager. Doggy hopes and believes that music can provide enjoyment and happiness for young people that meander in the streets.
But Crossfire has had some obstacles. For example, previous champions Adlib, which won in 2012, and all the other talented teams to participating in the 2013 championship. Will Crossfire’s hope come true…?

I want the viewers to know that the young people whose background are both American and Caribbean continue to follow their traditions, cultures and roots even in Brooklyn. Many people are still unaware the steel pan and it’s prominence in the Americas. There is even discrimination against steel pannists from people of differing cultures. This instrument proves the fact that the players have Caribbean blood and their identities. “I want more people to know the wonderful instrument and enjoy it.” I am glad if the viewers feel the players thoughts and emotions.

ストーリー：
ニューヨーク、ブルックリン区で１５年以上の歴史をもつ、スティールパンバンド、『クロスファイヤー』は、２０１３年夏に、開催４１年目を迎えた全米最大のスティールパン大会、“パノラマコンペティション”に出場した。クロスファイヤーはこれまで幾度となく大会に挑戦してきたが、いまだ優勝はなし。前年の大会では、強豪チーム『アドリブ』に破れ、惜しくも２位。今年の大会こそは、とメンバーたちも意気込む。
ブルックリン区の高校に通う１６歳の青年、ダニエル・アイザイア。彼はクロスファイヤーでテナーパンを担当し、将来ミュージシャンになることを目標としている。スティールパンを始めてから約４年、自分にとって特別な楽器だと感じている。その理由は、トリニダード・トバゴ出身である両親のバックグランドやカリビアンの文化に深く関係していた。 アメリカでの認知度が低いスティールパンを、多くの人に“楽器”として知ってもらいという想いが募る。
チェイス・アリエルは今年の大会でクロスファイヤーを率いるリーダー。責任感が強く姉御肌である彼女は、バンドメンバーや周囲からの信頼も厚い。
ニューヨーク大学卒業で、新進気鋭の音楽家、ウィリアムス・ケンドル。チームが演奏する曲を担当するアレンジャーとして、大規模のバンドを教えるのは彼にとっても初めての経験。プレイヤー達に、究竟を乗り越える力を学んで欲しいと願う。
ドーバー・キーファーはギターパンを担当する、チームでも数少ないトリニダード出身の青年。１０代の時にニューヨークに移住してからも、母国トリニダードの文化を慕い、スティールパンの演奏を続けてきた。自分とは違ったバックグランドを持つアメリカ生まれのプレイヤー達に、彼は何を想うのか。
クロスファイヤーは、バンドマネージャーを務める、ダグラス・マーティン（通称：ドギー）によって１９９９年に設立された。ドギーの願いは、没頭できる事が見つからず、路上でさまよう子供たちに、音楽を通して楽しみを見出してもらうこと。
大会優勝を目指すクロスファイヤーの前に立ち塞がるのは、前年の大会で優勝し、２０１３年大会でも強敵となるアドリブなど、他９チーム。クロスファイヤーの初優勝は叶うのか。

私がこの映画で皆さんに感じてほしいメッセージは、アメリカ、そしてカリビアンの国々で生まれ育った若者達が、この街ブルックリンで人知れず自分達のルーツ、そして文化を守り続けている姿があるということです。スティールパンは世界で比較してみると、未だに認知度が低く偏見があります。しかし、トリニダード・トバゴから生まれたこの楽器は、プレーヤー達にとっては彼らにカリビアンの血が通っているという事実や彼らのアイデンティティを証明してくれるものでした。「よりたくさんの人々にこの楽器の素晴らしさを知ってもらいたい」。そんなプレーヤー達の想いを感じ取ってもらえたら幸いです。
